HOW DR. MARK ROBINSON’S SKILL & CREATIVITY SAVED OUR HORSE
We love all our horses, but HC is special. He’s a big powerful black roan with a gentle personality and a whole lot of spirit. And he is our best and most reliable riding horse. This winter HC’s leg was broken by a passing kick from another horse at feeding time. And it quickly became clear that we were facing the heart wrenching possibility we might lose him. A broken leg is serious, especially a break in the elbow as was HC’s case. We knew this could mean the end of the road for our beloved HC. So we immediately called Mark.
Dr. Mark Robinson, owner of Alpine Veterinarian Service, Inc. has long been our relied upon vet for our horses and dogs. Mark is surrounded by a thick cloud of amazing stories, the kind that legends are made of. Those stories include things the many ground-breaking surgeries he’s developed that have been adopted by vets across the country and new techniques he’s invented to help big animals heal faster. Universities, ranchers, and pet owners all over seek him out and vet students clamor to intern with him. We’ve always treasured Mark as a trusted vet and friend; but this time, we got a front row seat to watch him at work and understand more keenly what an amazing treasure this man is to our community and to our animals.
Mark’s a calm, compassionate straight-shooting guy. It’s clear the gears are always turning upstairs as he observes, assesses, analyses from every angle. The mobile x-rays he took showed it was a bad break on HC. When he shared the news, if felt like all the oxygen was sucked out of the room for us. It wasn’t good. But Mark doesn’t give up easily and he always thinks outside the box. He then shared an idea he had been mulling over. Mark proposed crafting a cast with PVC tubing that would immobilize his leg from hoof to shoulder. We’d never heard of such a thing and it largely depended on HC’s willingness to accept such a rigid limitation to his mobility. But it was worth a try. So Mark set to work on the biggest diameter PVC pipe available using a saw and a heatgun to sculpt. The result was a solid sculpture Michelangelo would have approved of.
For weeks, Mark and his team patiently kept an endless routine of unwrapping, checking, rewrapping and re-sculpting new PVC casts. HC uncomplainingly endured the rigid cast and adjusted, developing a technique to carefully move around with the cast. Mark and his team always made sure there was another horse as his companion in one of the many beautiful adjacent stalls in Alpine Veterinarian’s Barn.
Finally the day came when the x-rays showed a beautifully healed leg. The cast was removed and HC was moved to a nearby boarding facility where he could be closely monitored by Mark and his team while recouping for this next recovery segment.
We are extremely grateful to Mark as vet and a friend. Those aren’t just stories that surround him, we’ve experienced a new story first hand. His skill, ingenuity, and persistence have saved our horse. Our community is blessed to have Dr. Mark Robinson and his team.
